DIY Miter Saw Table VS Dewalt Chop Saw Stand

In the world of home improvement, there is usually more than one way to get the job done. Sometimes when you're up against a tight budget or a short deadline, you need to be creative. If you don't have the exact tool for the project, you can often make do with a bit of ingenuity and a few items that you may already have on hand. In this blog, I'm making a side by side comparison of my home-made miter saw table and a Dewalt miter saw stand.

The material list for the homemade chop saw table is very short! Two 2X4's and one 2X6, some 2" and 3" screws (drywall screws are perfectly fine). If you don't have a workbench to put this table, you can use two sawhorses, or even just use it on the floor. Of course it's much easier to have it at waist height, especially if you have a lot of cuts to make- so I opted for the sawhorse version.
Pictured below are the sawhorses I have always used and they work well for this table. Not only are they durable, but they fold up nicely too. I tend to prefer things that are multi use and store easily. Check out my video here to see how else I use these saw horses to make my life easier!

If you opt for a Dewalt stand like the one below, you will also need to purchase the mounting brackets as well. As you can see the items you need add up to about $229.00.

Let's weigh out the pros and cons:

My DIY Miter Saw Table

Very cost effective at less than $20.00
Full length support without adjustment
Remove a few screws to store it about 6′ long
Initial time investment to assemble
Very sturdy and durable
Makes cutting long pieces of lumber safe and easy

Dewalt Miter Saw Stand

Cost will be around $230.00
Sliding support may need readjustment
Folds up to about 6′ quickly and easily
Ready to go out of the box
Durable but take care not to bend frame or supports
Makes cutting long pieces of lumber safe and easy

So which one is the best choice?

Clearly, if budget is the most important aspect for you, my DIY table can’t be beat! It’s a savings of over $200.00. It is also every bit as functional as the pricier Dewalt stand. (The satisfaction of making custom accessories for your tools isn’t all that horrible either.)
If you are going to be on the go to different job sites, you will probably appreciate the ease of set up and break down with the Dewalt. Just take care not to put anything too heavy on it during transport. My Dewalt saw stand has taken a bit of abuse over the previous years with subcontractors casually tossing it in back of the work truck.
Either way- it’s hard to lose!
